Soil Testing Time

I am available to do soil tests and presidedress nitrogen tests (PSNT). Please let me know if you would like me to do any. Or if you have new test results let me know so I can add them to your records. I am also available to go over them with you. Ideally you would do at least 1/3 of your fields every year so that all fields are tested at least once every 3 years. Fall may be the best time to test because you have plenty of time to get them done and get the results.

Modified Morgan’s Extract

If you are having new soil tests done by your fertilizer dealer, please request the lab use the Modified Morgan’s Extract for phosphorus or the UVM lab, which uses this extractant. UVM uses the Modified Morgan’s extractant because they believe it gives better results in our New England soils. Often labs will do this test if it is requested. Aluminum tests results are also helpful for phosphors recommendations. All the soil tests I do I send to University of Vermont.

The Modified Morgan’s is a weaker extractant and gives a result for Available Phosphorus. Using results for Available Phosphorus and Reserve along with Aluminum test results gives a better understanding of the Phosphorus in the soil. Results from Modified Morgan’s soil tests allow use of the UVM Phosphorus Index, which may allow for more latitude in using Phosphorus from manure or fertilizer on fields. Participation in USDA cost share programs that require Nutrient Management Plans will be looking for tests using the Modified Morgan’s extractant.
