25th Annual Plant Sale

plantsale_logoThe Winooski NRCD has been offering its Annual Conservation Plant Sale for 25 years. We are committed to offering this sale in the hopes of promoting the planting of native trees and shrubs throughout Vermont’s landscape. Furthermore, it is a fund-raiser for the Winooski NRCD. The money that we make on the Plant Sale allows us to bring workshops, educational information, and high-quality conservation programs to the people in our District. We hope that you feel as positive about our tree sale as we do.

Check out the Plant List, print the Plant Order Form (a pdf file) and mail in your order.

Orders must be postmarked by Monday, April 7th, 2008.

All orders must be picked up on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 between 9am—Noon in Williston or Berlin.

Limited quantities are available. Order Early! Orders will be processed First Come—First Serve.

For more information on the plant sale, the plant sale raffle, and how to get coupons for free bags of topsoil donated by Home Depot see our Spring Newsletter (web version) or printable pdf version .

Vermont Rain Garden Manual: Gardening to Absorb the Storm

The Vermont Rain Garden Manual: Gardening to Absorb the Storm and rain garden plant list are now available for anyone who is interested in protecting our local rivers and lakes through gardening.

This full color Manual includes step-by-step instructions on rain garden design and installation; five creative planting plans; information about curb-cut rain gardens (perfect for urban streetscapes); a rain garden plant list (including 150 plants suitable for Vermont rain gardens), and an explanation of how rain gardens are compatible with the Vermont Stormwater Management Manual.

The Rain Garden page contains instructions for viewing and downloading the manual and plant list.

Volunteers Needed

HELP!   The District needs volunteers to:

  • help with the Conservation Plant Sale in May,
  • write grant proposals for implementing Vermont’s First Rainwater Harvesting System, to set up partnerships between citizen monitoring programs and stream health laboratories, and to install interpretative plaques at current rain gardens
  • help students in classrooms to write a rain barrel brochure, paint, and distribute rain barrels
  • introduce rain garden lessons to area schools
  • work on storm water projects by identifying problem areas in the Allen Brook watershed and by filming installed storm water systems and low-impact development designs during heavy downpours
  • create a Rain Garden website based on the Vermont Rain Garden Manual
  • man a booth at flower shows, sustainability fairs and seek new places to spread the word about conserving, protecting and enhancing our water resources.

The Volunteer Page has contact information and more details.

Annual Fundraising Campaign Now Underway

Our conservation and educational programs require valuable staff time, strong organizational support, and significant resources. We receive a limited amount of annually appropriated funding from the VT Agency of Agriculture and primarily seek project grants to implement our conservation programs. Therefore, we are launching our first Annual Capital Campaign to meet the financial needs of our programs and general operations. This campaign is divided into three phases. Each phase has it's own financial goal, timeline, and intended commmunity group supporters.
