The Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District (WNRCD) is a non-profit organization servicing the Winooski River Watershed, Browns River, and portions of Lake Champlain's sub–watersheds, including all the land and resources within Chittenden and Washington counties and three towns in Orange County. Founded in 1940, we are dedicated to providing on-the-ground conservation assistance as well as promoting public awareness and appreciation for the value of conserving our natural resources. 2012 Tree and Trout Sale Announced

This years Tree and Shrub Sale will take place on Saturday, April 28 between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm at our Berlin and Williston offices.  Order forms and information about this years plants can be found here.  Make sure you check out the Tree Sale Brochure before you place your order.  Hard copies will be mailed out shortly.

This year we will also be hosting a Spring Trout Sale.  It will take place on Sunday, May 6 at Rusty Parker Memorial Park in Waterbury, VT.  Pre-orders will be accepted until Friday, April 20. Click here for more information.

'Living in Harmony with Streams' Released

We are pleased to announce the release of  Living in Harmony with Streams: A Citizen's Handbook to How Streams Work.   This handbook describes the natural processes of streams and how human development and actions impact those processes.  It also describes the Vermont Rivers Program, stream geomorphic assessments, and corridor planning. 

This project was a joint venture bewteen the Friends of the Winooski River, White River Natural Resources Conservation District, and WNRCD.  Funding and/or technical assistance was provided by the Vermont Rivers Program, the Ecosystem Restoration Program and the Lake Champlain Basin Program.  Thank you to the Friends of the Winooski River for taking the lead on this publication. 

 


Two Openings on WNRCD Board of Supervisors

The Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District has two open positions on its Board of Supervisors.  If you are concerned about our natural resources, maintaining and improving water quality, and protecting our soil, consider becoming a Board member.


Board members must live within the area they represent (Chittenden County, Washington County, and the Towns of Orange, Washington, and Williamstown) and own one or more acres of land.  Board Supervisors are responsible for setting policy and program direction for the Conservation District.  Specific responsibilities include attending one monthly Board meeting, plus additional meetings and regional conservation events.  Supervisors do not receive a salary, however they are paid per diem plus expenses.

Interested individuals must submit a petition with no less than 25 signatures (also owning one or more acres of land and living within the District boundaries) to Justin Kenney, District Manager; Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District; 617 Comstock Road, Suite 1, Berlin, VT 05602.  Petition forms may be picked up at the Winooski NRCD office at 617 Comstock Road, Suite 1, Berlin, VT or 1193 South Brownell Road, Suite 35, Williston, VT from 9:00am and 4:00pm.  Petitions can also be downloaded here.  The deadline for petitions is February 28, 2012.  For more information, call 802-828-4493 x113.


Flood Resiliency in the Dog River and the Science of Rivers

 

WNRCD, in collaboration with the Towns of Berlin and Northfield and the Friends of the Winooski River, is hosting a workshop focused on the impacts of Tropical Storm Irene in the Dog River watershed and what river science can teach us as we move towards a flood resilient future.  The workshop is free and open to the public.  If you are intrested, please join us on Thursday, January 26 at 7:00 PM in the Cabot Science Building, Room 85 at Norwich University.  More details can be found here


Bloom: The Emergence of Ecological Design

 

The premiere of "Bloom: The Emergence of Ecological Design" will happen on Thursday, December 15 at 7:00 PM at the Palace 9 Cinemas in South Burlington.  This is the 3-part follow-up series to the award winning film "Bloom: The Plight of Lake Champlain."
