2006 Plant Sale Create a Habitat Program

This sale program helps to generate funds to support the District's conservation programs. The nursery items are bare rootstock unless other wise indicated. Fact sheets and instructions on care will be available at pick-up. If you have any questions concerning type of soil, water needs or care for the listed species contact the Conservation District at 254-5323 Ext.104 or jolene.hamilton@vt.nacdnet.net.

Orders will be taken until April 21, 2006. Order early as supplies of some plants are limited. Pick-up of stock will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on May 6th in the Natural Resources Department at the Windham Regional Career Center. The District will not be responsible for stock once it is removed from the pick-up site and reserves the right to refund money for stock that becomes unavailable. No refunds will be made on any orders not picked up by the designated date.

Special Notes for 2006

Please note on your calendar the date and time of pickup as our office will not be calling customers prior to pick up.

The cut off date to order is earlier this year which will allow us more time to prepare your order. All orders will be complete on distribution day.

The pick-up site will be the same as last year. In Brattleboro traveling on Fairground Road you need to take Atwood Street and follow the signs to the Windham Regional Career Center on the right. If you need detailed directions please call in advance.

Early pickup may be available, please call in advance if you need to arrange an alternative pickup time.

The first 40 customers to order will receive a free Spring Blue Aster.

Those customers who purchased bearberry last year will receive replacements this year at no cost. The 2005 stock was not up to our standards so will be replaced. A list of those folks has been retained here at the office if you need to check with us.

Apple trees are semi-dwarf- it's best to plant 2 varieties for good cross-pollination.

Blueberries - it's best to plant 2 varieties for good cross-pollination.

Nursery Stock

Conifers

Balsam Fir: Abies balsamea (4 year seedlings) A longtime favorite Christmas tree due to its distinctive aroma, sturdy branches, symmetrical shape, and excellent needle retention. The Balsam has flattened needles about 3/4 inches long and bright green on top. Several birds including the ruffed grouse eat balsam seeds. Soil: moist, well-drained loams. Light: full sun. Height: 40 to 60 feet.

Norway Spruce: Picea abies (3 year seedlings) This is one of the fastest growing spruces and is a native of northern Europe, where is it prized as a valuable timber tree. Noted for its pendulous branching habit, dark, shiny, green needles and large cones, this species does better than other spruces on poor, drier soils. It can be used as a background planting, screen for privacy or hedge. Soil: moist and well drained. Light: full sun or shade. Height: 10 to 12 feet in 10 years, matures at 80 to 100 feet.

European Larch: Larix decidua (2 year seedlings) A fast growing deciduous conifer well adapted to a variety of sites. Foliage turns a smokey gold color in autumn before dropping its needles. Soil: sufficient moisture, well-drained. Light: intolerant of shade, sunny. Height: 70 to 75'in height by 25 to 30; in width. Prune in mid-summer.

Northern White Cedar: Thuja occidentalis (3 year seedlings) A medium-sized evergreen tree with scale like; flat foliage makes it a very popular tree for landscape, hedge and windbreak use. Its pyramidal growth pattern is easily shaped. Red squirrel and many songbirds consume its seeds. Soil: moist and loamy. Light: full or 1/2-day sun. Height: 40 to 50 feet.

Hardwood Trees

Black Walnut: Juglans nigra (1 year seedlings) Foliage consists of compound leaves 12-24" long. Large rich, flavorful nuts are not the only aspect of value for this tree. It is one of the most highly valued of North American hardwoods for cabinets and furniture. Needs a pollinator (more than one tree) and starts to bear fruit in 4 or 5 years. Soil: prefers deep, rich, moist soils. Light: full sun. Height: 50 to 70 feet.

Sugar Maple: Acer saccharum (2 year seedlings) One of our most valuable hardwood trees supplying lumber and maple syrup. Soil: prefers fertile, moist but well-drained loamy soils. Light: tolerates shade. Height: 70 to 80 feet.

Wildlife/Songbird Shrubs and Trees

Northern Bayberry: (myrica pennsylvanica) Wildlife value: food and cover; plant 1-3'apart for best wildlife use, fruit consumed by songbirds and game birds; Fruit: persists through winter. Soil: well drained to dry. Light: full sun or shade. Height: 3-6 feet in height.

Alternate-Leaf Dogwood: (cornus alternifolia) Flowers: May-June, Fruit: dark berries in clusters eaten by game birds and songbirds. Twigs browsed by deer and rabbits. Soil: moist to dry soils, good shade tolerance. Light: sun or partial shade. Height: 10 to 20 feet.

Redosier Dogwood: (Cornus cericea) This multi-stemmed, spreading shrub is excellent for massing in large areas. White flowers in June and white berries in fall. Twigs turn red in winter, beautiful when framed by snow. Great root structure for holding soil on sloped areas. Very adaptable. Soil: thrives in wet soils. Light: full sun to partial shade. Height: 7 to 9 feet in height spreading to 10 feet or more.

Rosa Rugosa: (Rugosa rose) A sturdy shrub with stout upright stems. Excellent hedge. The most popular of all the hardy roses. Extremely vigorous and hardy. Deep pink to white flowers (up to 3 inches). Edible red fruit nearly 1 inch. Makes delicious rose hip jelly! It is a valuable plant for difficult sites: banks, cuts, fills, sandy soils and saline environments. Soil: prefers well-drained soil supplemented with organic matter. Light: sunny. Height: 4 to 6 feet by 4 to 6 feet.

Winterberry Holly: (llex verticillata) One of the best deciduous plants for fall and winter. Female plants produce bright red berries in profusion in early fall while leaves are still green and remain until mid winter after leaf drop. Berried stems often used in seasonal dried arrangements. Native. Very good shrub as a screen or background. Attracts winter song birds. Soil: acid, will tolerate wet swampy conditions. Light: full sun or partial shade. Height: 6 to 10 feet with a similar spread.

Apple Trees

Royal Empire: McIntosh type with better color and flavor, longer shelf life and refrigerated keeping ability. Medium size, round, firmer quality dessert apple; also good for cider. Vigorous upright, early bearing tree, strong , wide crotch angles. Sets heavy bloom, produces annually. Needs some thinning.

Imperial Gala: Medium size, oval to round reddish orange fruit. Extremely firm, very juicy, sweet, mildly aromatic yellow flesh. Vigorous tree with long, pliant branching.

Fruits and Vegetables

Blueberries - it's best to plant at least 2 varieties for good cross-pollination.

Bluecrop Blueberries: (Mid-season) The leading commercial variety grown, Blue crop produces high yields of large, bright blue berries. Berry flavor is superb when used in desserts, frozen and even fresh. Bluecrop is both frost and winter hardy, growing to height of 4-6 feet.

Patriot Blueberries: Early variety, that is extremely winter-hardy. Variety is vigorous and grows upright to a height of 4-6 feet. Patriot adapts to many different soil types. The fruit is large and has very good flavor.

Nova Raspberries: This very winter-hardy variety is an excellent choice where high yields and dependability are required. Berries are firm, bright-red, medium to large in size and have good shelf life. Canes are vigorous, growing upright with light spines. Excellent choice for northern locations.

Taylor Raspberries: "Best flavored raspberry variety" is Taylor's trademark. The late mid-season variety is hardy, vigorous and productive. Berries are medium-large and firm. Excellent for the home garden, PYO and roadside markets

Sparkle Strawberry: (Late-Midseason) The best berry for jam and freezing. Sparkle has been well known for flavorful, high-quality, attractive fruit for over 60 years. An extremely vigorous variety, do not allow the bed to become too thick and you'll be rewarded with a nice crop of tasty, medium-sized berries. Sparkle is an excellent choice for home gardeners.

Honeoye Strawberry: (Early-Midseason) Large, easy to pick berries combined with high yields and a long fruiting season. Honeoye is vigorous and very winter hardy. Home gardeners appreciate its excellent freezing quality. Optimum flavor is produced by growing this variety on medium to light soil. A #1 selling early mid-season variety.

Annapolis Strawberry: (Early-Season) Attractive, high-quality berries that maintain their large size through several pickings makes Annapolis an excellent choice. A vigorous and winter hardy variety, Annapolis has resistance to red stele. With its consistent performance, Annapolis has become a top commercial variety.

Jersey Knight Asparagus: (US Plant Patent #6624) One of the New Jersey hybrids, this all-male variety is extremely vigorous, has large succulent spears. This variety is resistant to rust, crown rot, and fusarium, and does better in heavy clay-type soils.

Rovada Currant: Rovada is a red current with very large fruit on extremely long strigs. This combination produces a heavy crop that is easy to pick. The plant is free of mildew and other leaf diseases. Its late flowering escapes frost.

Jewel Black Raspberry: Very popular black raspberry produces excellent yields of superb-quality berries. The fruit is glossy black in color, a large size and has a rich raspberry flavor. It is an excellent choice for use in jams and jellies. Jewel is winter hardy and a reliable choice.

MacDonald Rhubarb: This strain provides its excellent production for home gardeners. This very vigorous, upright-growing strain produces large, tender stalks and has acceptable red color. Shows resistance to root-rot problems. Plant 3 feet apart in well prepared soil. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.

Somerset Seedless Table Grape: Somerset Seedless is a seedless grape with small, orange-red berries and good flavor. It's hardy to about -30 F.

Spring Perennials

Cimicifuga Ramosa Atropurpurea: 3-5' moisture-loving, blooms in summer & fall, purple-green in spring

Coreopsis Auriculata: 12-16" golden-orange fluted daisy-type flowers, well-drained, full sun/partial shade

Dianthus Deltoides Zing Rose: 6" red spring & summer blooming, best for ground cover or rock garden, full sun

Dicentra Spectabilis: 24-36" late spring blooming, large, fast growing plant with heart-shaped flowers, half shade

Digitalis Mertonensis: 24-30" foxglove, spires of dense pale chocolate flowers, low maintaince, full sun/partial shade

Echinacea P. Kim's Knee High: 24" rigid reflexed petals of a strong pink color cover a fast growing plant

Athryrium Dre's Dagger: 12" fern well rooted/heavy crowns, fronds form a unique three dimensional X, moist/shady

Athyrium X Ghost: 2-3' fern, clump-forming rigidly upright large/ghostly silver/gray foliage, shade, can be rather dry

Geranium End. Wargrave Pink: 6" compact/produces enormous amounts of purple flowers/thrives in partial shade

Miscanthus Sin Gold Bar: 16-20" variegated ornamental grass, short /quick to clump up, erect/ strong habit

Miscanthus S. Gracillium: 5-6' thin, silvery green leaves, one of the best Miscanthus grasses that always performs

Heliopsis Helianthoides Summer Nights: 3-4' golden yellow/mahogony center, moist well-drained soils/full sun

Hemerocallis Fire and Fog: 28"daylily, amazing color intensity/deep fuchsia-pink center, edged with pale yellow

Phlox Subulata Red Wing: 4-6" crimson with dark red eye, creeping phlox, long living rapidly spreading/full sun

Lily Asiatic Monte Negro: 38", excellent, very dark red lily, multiply year after year when planted in garden

Lily Asiatic Cancun: 38", terrific tropical-looking 2 tones yellow and orange, grow at 55-60 degrees F night temp.

Lily Oriental Casa Blanca: 47", very good outside, fragrant, considered best white oriental lily for the garden

Lily Oriental Starfighter: 43", this is an improved Stargazer, with more cleanly defined flowers

Rhododendron Orchid: 6-10' (2) year transplant, leaves dark/lustrous all year/sun full/ prune off long shoots/yearly

Rosa WM. Baffin: Hardy climber. Deep pink 2 ½ "double blooms in heavy clusters (up to 30). Slightly fragrant, recurrent flowering. Strong arching canes. Highly resistant to black spot and powdery mildew.

Accessories

Booster Pak Fertilizer Packets: 30 gram biodegradable planting packet. Provides a continuous supply of necessary plant nutrients in a balanced and steady rate improving both root and shoot development. 1 packet per 12" of plant height.

Vispore Tree Mats: Stops weeds for 3 years. It blocks 92% of the sunlight to kill existing weeds and grasses. Over 400 microfunnels cover each square inch of the mat that allows water to trickle through the soil. Mats are 3'x3'.
