A Land Treatment Plan (LTP) is an assessment of your farm's soil and water resources and current land-based management practices. It compiles the core data needed to develop a
USDA NRCS 590 Standard Nutrient Management Plan (NMP) and provides recommendations for continued resource stewardship and for compliance with State and Federal regulations.
NMP(s) are required of:
-
Large Farm Operations (LFOs) (greater than 700 mature dairy cows)
- Medium Farm
Operations (MFOs) (200-699 mature dairy cows) by March 2008.
- farms receiving asistance through Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) programs.
While the LTP itself is not
a requirement, having a LTP will make doing an NMP easier.
Land Treatment Plans are provided free of charge, and all farmers, regardless of farm size, are encouraged to sign up to have one completed. The land treatment planners are employed by Conservation Districts and their positions are
funded through cooperative partnerships between
Conservation Districts, USDA NRCS, and
Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets.
The Land Treatment Planner in our district is Jason Fleury. His article "A Day in the Field: The First Step to Land Treatment Planning" in the Winter 2007 Newsletter gives a view of some of the work that he does. His services are available for free to help any farmers who want to reduce soil loss and help protect Vermont waters.
