Low Impact Development Projects

  • Milton Rain Barrel Project – Help organize and advertise a sale of rain barrels painted by Milton High School students in June

  • Artistic Rain Barrel Project – Recruit local artists to paint rain barrels; contact hardware stores to ask for discounts on or donations of paint; staff educational rain barrel displays at community festivals and events including Burlington’s Art Hop

  • Vermont Rain Garden Contest – Spread the word about the 2nd Annual Vermont Rain Garden Contest; ask for donations from local nurseries and businesses for plants, compost, and prizes for winners; write press releases announcing the contest and winning rain gardens

  • Williston Stream Clean-up & Rain Garden Workshop – Help to advertise these two events through flyers, press releases, and Front Porch Forum; call local businesses for support; lead a team of volunteers the day of the stream clean-up (June 6th); provide logistical support the day of the rain garden workshop (June 13th)

  • Allen & Potash Brook Stormwater Demonstrational Tour – Help to organize a tour of stormwater demonstration projects in Williston & South Burlington during the fall of 2009

  • Storm Scouts – During heavy rain storms, identify problem areas in Chittenden County for future conservation projects

  • Capture the Moment - Take footage of installed stormwater treatment systems and Low Impact Development designs during heavy downpours

  • Rain Garden Signs– Bring recognition to rain gardens recently installed in the Winooski River Watershed by seeking and securing funds to design and install small interpretative plaques at each rain garden

Other Projects

  • Local Growers Guide for WashingtonCounty - Call Washington County farmers and producers for information about the locally grown products they offer;  work with a designer on the layout of the guide;  help to secure additional funds for the project

  • Conservation Tree Sale – Contact area businesses and request raffle donations; make a sandwich sign advertising the Tree Sale; assist at the Sale in early May; help to orchestrate the distribution of leftover trees, sold at the UVM Horticultural Farm’s Annual Bloomtime Festival in mid-May

Outreach & Education

  • Community Events – Staff an educational booth at flower shows, sustainability fairs, and seek new places to spread the word about conserving, protecting, and enhancing our water resources
  • Lesson Plans – Finalize rain garden lesson plans and introduce the curriculum to area schools

Grant Writing

  • Equipment & general needs– Help the District raise funds for or get donations of a laptop, LCD projector, USB flash drives, waders, and rain garden installation tools; work with staff to identify appropriate funding sources and write grants to support General District projects and initiatives

  • Conservation  projects – Work with staff to identify appropriate funding sources and write grants for urban conservation, watershed stewardship, agriculture, and education and outreach projects in the Winooski River Watershed

  • Grants database – update the Winooski NRCD’s grants database with current deadlines and grant requirements

Fundraising

  • Find local business sponsors for our bi-annual newsletter

  • Find raffle donations for our Annual Dinner, Annual Tree Sale, and other District events

  • Assist with our Annual Membership Drive for citizens, businesses, and municipalities

  • Plan and implement a creative fundraising event for the District

Website

  • General – Provide suggestions on layout and content of our current website and work with our webmaster to make changes

  • Project Updates – Work with staff and our webmaster to include current projects and events on the Winooski NRCD’s Web site
