The Major Tributaries of the Winooski River Watershed

The Winooski River begins in the town of Cabot and flows through Marshfield, Plainfield, East Montpelier, Montpelier, Middlesex, Moretown, Waterbury, Duxbury, Bolton, Richmond, Jericho, Williston, Essex, Winooski, Burlington, and Colchester before entering Lake Champlain.

From its beginning in Cabot to the outlet in Colchester, the Winooski River drops 1700 feet in elevation. The total length of the Winooski River system (including its tributaries) is around 198 miles. The entire Winooski River Watershed is approximately 690,000 acres or close to 10% of the State’s total land area

Alder Brook: begins in Essex Center and flows through the town of Essex.
Length:10 miles.
Watershed area: 6,762 acres.

Mill Brook: begins in Jericho, flows through Jericho.
Length: 9.5 miles.
Watershed area: 10,350 acres.
Waterbury (Little River):
begins in Morristown, flows through Stowe and enters the Winooski River in Waterbury. It passes through a retention dam built in 1938.
Length 15 miles.
Watershed area: 71,070 acres.
North Branch (Worcester
Branch):
begins in Elmore and flows through Worcester, Middlesex, and East Montpelier and enters the Winooski River in Montpelier. It passes through a retention dam built after the 1927 flood.
Length: 18 miles.
Watershed area: 48,300 acres.
Kingsbury Branch: begins in Woodbury, flows through Calais, and enters the Winooski River in East Montpelier.
Length: 12 miles.
Watershed area: 34,500 acres.
Muddy Brook: Outlets from Shelburne Pond, flows through Shelburne and follows the So. Burlington-Williston town line to the Winooski River.
Length: 5.5 miles.
Watershed area: 16, 560 acres.
Jail Branch: begins in the town of Washington, flows through the town of Orange and enters the Stevens Branch in Barre. It passes through a retention dam built after the 1927 flood.
Length: 16 miles.
Watershed area: 31,050 acres.
Allen Brook: begins and flows through Williston.
Length: 10 miles. Watershed area: 6,900 acre
Huntington River: begins in Fayston, flows through Buel’s Gore, Starksboro, Huntington, and enters the Winooski River in Richmond.
Length: 20 miles.
Watershed area: 43, 470 acres.
Mad River: begins in Granville, flows through Warren and Waitsfield and enters the Winooski River in Moretown.
Length: 26 miles.
Watershed area: 91,080 acres.
Dog River: begins in Roxbury, flows through Northfield, and enters the Winooski River in Berlin.
Length: 18 miles.
Watershed area: 60,030 acres.
Stevens Branch: begins in Williamstown, flows through Barre, and enters the Winooski River in Berlin.
Length: 13 miles.
Watershed area: 82,800 acres.
