This past summer, the Windham County Natural Resources Conservation District launched a creative project to raise awareness about storm drains and their role in protecting water systems. The initiative encouraged community involvement and environmental stewardship through art and was made possible through partnerships with Brattleboro Museum and Arts Center, the Town of Brattleboro, and the Brattleboro Arts Committee.
In celebration of Earth Day 2023, an art contest was held for K-6 students, asking them to design a piece of public art to be displayed around a storm drain in downtown Brattleboro. The contest engaged young minds with environmental issues, and the winning design was transformed into a mural by local artists, the Art Lords.
The project aimed to emphasize the importance of keeping storm drains clear, as blockages from debris prevent proper water flow, resulting in flooding and the pollution of rivers and streams. The project encourages local residents to “adopt” a storm drain, culvert, or pipe outlet near their homes or businesses, ensuring they stay clean, particularly before heavy weather events.
Supported by the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, the project blends art, education, and environmental conservation. By engaging the community, especially youth, the project fosters a sense of environmental responsibility. The mural serves as a lasting reminder about the importance of protecting our natural resources and maintaining clean storm drains for a healthier environmental future.
