Meet the Essex County Team


Heather Johnson
District Manager

Heather Johnson has served in the water quality sector for over 10 years. Her journey began as a Technician at the Essex County Conservation District in New York. Her passion grew into a position as a Nutrient Management Specialist, acquiring experience on Large and Medium CAFOs with regards to the NYS rules and regulations. She represented the Farm Buisness Owner on On-Farm Inspections and coordinated many engineering projects between NRCS, FSA, and the State of NY. She has an AS Biology-North Country Community College, BA Environmental Studies - SUNY Potsdam - has taken a Fundamentals of Soil Science at UVM. She has acquired the Vermont Natural Shoreland Erosion Control Certification and is currently working on becoming a Technical Service Provider. In her personnel life, she enjoys spending time with her family, riding her horse on her parents farm, kayaking, playing soccer, and gardening.

Jessica Colby
Conservation Coordinator

Jessica Colby is a Vermont native who returned home to Essex County after graduating from the University of Vermont in 2017 with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and Forestry. Prior to joining the Essex County NRCD as their conservation coordinator, Jessica worked for Trout Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy of Vermont, Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation, and Northwoods Stewardship Center. She has also worked with Dr. Stephen Keller at the University of Vermont on the conservation genetics project for spruce throughout Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. She has volunteered extensively with both the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife and New Hampshire Fish and Game. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors kayaking, skiing, and photographing her adventures.
